There are few places in the world that feel truly untainted by tourists, but Myanmar is one of them… for now. Every month though, it seems ever more open and accommodating to travellers. It’s for that reason that I tell everyone they should head there NOW, before the country is flooded with tourists.
The good thing about Myanmar’s relaxing its borders is that it’s becoming so much easier to actually get into the country in the first place. When I went there a few years ago, I had to post my passport to the embassy in Canberra and have it shipped back to me with a brand new visa stuck in the pages.
Now, it’s soooo much easier. Sure, you might still need to get your Myanmar visa before arrival. But now you can get it simply by applying online for the Myanmar Tourist visa without all the hassle of getting your passport to an actual embassy.
Yep, it’s hard to imagine, but the Myanmar government has actually embraced technology that allows you to apply completely online from the comfort of your home. How times have changed!
So what is the Myanmar e-Tourist Visa?
The Myanmar Government allows citizens from all over the world to apply for their tourist visa online. Check here to see if your nationality qualifies for this online visa. If you’re from Australia, Canada, the States or the UK, chances are you’re going to need a visa.
There are also a few countries’ citizens who do not need to apply for a visa to enter Myanmar (if they stay less than 14 days). They include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand (3 International Airports Only), Vietnam.
This new eVisa replaces the old traditional visa label/sticker that graced my own passport after it was returned shipped to Myanmar’s embassy in Australia. Instead, what you get is a visa in a PDF document via email. How very 21st century.
This visa is electronically linked to your passport. It’s valid for 90 days, though you can only stay up to 28 days inside Myanmar. Please note it comes with one single entry.
Are there any restrictions if I apply online?
OK so it’s not as easy as rocking up with a PDF print-out and you’re done. As always with travel, there are a few other teeny tiny details you’ve gotta check before you head off. For a start, you need to:
- Upload a digital passport photo
- Have a passport valid for at least 6 months after you arrive in Burma
- Complete a few personal details online…
It’s also worth noting the Myanmar e-visa can ONLY be used at certain airports and border posts. These are:
- Yangon International Airport
- Mandalay International Airport
- Nay Pyi Taw International Airport
- Tachileik Land Border Checkpoint
- Myawaddy Land Border Checkpoint
- Kawthaung Land Border Checkpoint
So, if you are planning to arrive by another border post, airport, cruise or boat, you need to apply for a visa at your nearest Myanmar embassy.
How can you apply for the Myanmar eVisa online?
You can apply for the visa by using iVisa.com in a few easy steps.
- Fill out the online application. Pay attention here, because this is very important: the Myanmar eVisa can take up to 3 days to get approval so apply early so that you are not forced to delay or cancel your trip because of your visa.

- Take your Myanmar visa document with you when your travel to Myanmar.
Trust me, Myanmar will be one of the most memorable destinations you will ever visit. And if you like lavish temples, colourful markets, lakes and pagodas, I guarantee you are going to LOVE this country. Hell, I’m getting jealous just thinking about the adventures you’re going to have!
