Ever wondered why Aussies travel large chunks of the world for long periods of time? Have you never looked at a map? We’re seriously far from everything. Sure we’ve got New Zealand (hey friends!). But for those in Sydney and Melbourne, it’s still a hike just to get to our next closest neighbours in southeast Asia.
Fellow Aussie Kate Mackay discovered she was onto something when she moved to London and found the world at her fingertips. This is her story. Read it, and you might be tempted to follow in her footsteps, taking the leap to spend some time in a country with easy access to, well, the rest of the world really.
I love travel because it reminds me I’m free. I can wing it, choose at the last minute how I want to spend my day, meet new interesting people, try new cuisines and see new sights.
How often do you travel?
I was travelling once a month while living in London but have now been back in Melbourne for 6 months, with no travel! A huge adjustment.
How do you make regular travel feasible?
I made it happen by working in a job that was flexible and a bit more mundane than I would have liked. I had a boss that was very easy going with taking time off at short notice, and a company that valued their staff enough to allow that. I was fortunate for sure!
I could have, though, been in a job that was more aligned with my career goals and gotten more money for. But I took that risk/opportunity. I spent a small amount of money on trips, opting for budget airlines, hostels and cheap food, and loved it just as much.
A few other tips…
- Keep an eye on good flight deals and be flexible!
- Utilise supermarkets and bakeries to save money on meals.
- Learn at least a few key words and phrases in each country you go to.
- Get off the tourist track and explore lesser known areas.
- Also, get to know the locals as much as you can.
What was your first travel memory?
I headed to the USA with my grandparents when I was 13. Wow, what an awkward age to go travelling for two weeks with Nan and Pop! We went to Disneyland, but only for about 2 or so hours, much to my dismay.
What are your favourite countries?
Turkey and Germany. Turkey for the gorgeous scenery, friendly locals and delicious cheap food, and Germany for its rich history, accent, and culture overall.
Why do you do it all?
I love travel because it reminds me I’m free. I can wing it, choose at the last minute how I want to spend my day, meet new interesting people, try new cuisines and see new sights. It’s a delight for all the senses and it’s inspiring to experience cultures unlike your own.
